TONY MAKEPEACE: The Magic of Quicktime VR Photography
Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Tony Makepeace and Quicktime Photography

We have been alternating between topics on the very new and the very old. REG HOLLOWAY: Pictures in the Paper
Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Pictures in the Paper
Reg Holloway collects the old press cameras. Last year he published a book on "The Evolution and Demise of The Larger Format Press Camera". We are seeing first hand the latest transformation of the newspaper. Years ago the giant Toronto Star switched from a multi-issue afternoon paper to a morning paper and today is a shadow of itself struggling for survival as newspapers are fast morphing into web based services in pursuit of advertising. Most papers - if they have survived at all - have a robust web presence. PHSC member Holloway takes us back to the days when the presses ran full out to meet daily deadlines and the latest innovation was pictures to complement the written stories.

ANDY STEIN: The History of Henry’s - Photographic Retailing
Wednesday, October 21st, 2009
Henrys of Toronto

If you are a photographer in Southern Ontario, then you know Henry's. The store at Church and Queen has been a magnet for photographers for decades. I can remember dropping in on my lunch hours and before I moved to Toronto, driving down on Saturdays to check out things new and old. Join us at the next meeting when Andy Stein tells us about the history of this famous landmark enterprise and the evolution of the photographic retail industry.

NOTE: Ren Bostelaar did a coda touching on three items of interest to the modern digital imaging professional while Janet Smith prepared a gift for each attendee. A great evening for the old and new in photography.

Leitz Stand Ib c1891

Our members are an eclectic bunch so you never know what to expect at our annual Show & Tell night except it will be unusual and interesting. For example, at left is a microscope made in 1891 by Leitz, famous in photography for the amazing Leica camera that pushed the move to 35mm film. (Did you know the Famous M series Leica from 1954 is still around? The newest model, the M9, is a full frame digital version that accepts ALL interchangeable lenses for the screw mount and M series cameras back to the 1930s!)

And it's our annual Christmas gift exchange - bring a wrapped gift of interest to any PHSC member and valued at about $15 to participate. And we will also have another silent auction- bring your wallet! Lots of bargains - Last year's auction was a sellout success!
