Of One Cloth:
The Business, Science and Art of Photography
by James Jensen - June 15th, 2005

Until the widespread adoption of the dry plate in the 1880's, photography was practiced almost exclusively by professionals. They simultaneously had to operate a commercial business, master uncertain new technologies, and advance the artistic ambitions of a new medium.

In this presentation James examines how nineteenth century photographers responded to these challenges. It details the numerous difficulties photographers faced and the diverse responses they adopted. Drawn from extensive research of primary documents and supported by numerous illustrations, Mr. Jensen's talk offers a comprehensive look at how photographers integrated the expansive concerns of early photographic practice.

Matt Isenburg on Modern-day Collecting - Sep 21st, 2005

Last time Matt visited us five years ago, he talked about his collection and stories behind selected items. In this sequel, Ramblings and Recollections, Matt brings us fresh tales and recollections on collecting. A natural story-teller with a pleasant New England voice and an awesome background in photographica and especially dauguerreotypes and the cameras and apparatus of that early era in photography. This presentation is right up to date using Power Point, a Lap-top, and a digital projector. The illustrative images and text form an appealing background for Matt's words.
