NEXT TORONTO MEETING - Wednesday, February 17th, 2010
LORNE SHIELDS: An Anaglyph 3D Show of Bicycle Photographic History.

Lorne Shields by Robert LansdalePopular speaker and PHSC member Lorne Shields is an expert on bicycle history. His collection of bicycles now resides in the National Archives. Lorne's talks are one of the most searched items on our web site. This session promises a fascinating look at bicycle history using that phenomenon that is having one of its periodic revivals - Stereo images. Thanks to Bob Lansdale for this informal photo of Lorne taken at last fall's PhotoHistory Symposium in Rochester where Lorne was one of the guest speakers.

The public is welcome - please join us.
Go to our Programs page for times and directions (at the top of the left side bar on that page).

Zeiss-Ikon-1931 LAS VEGAS, NEVADA. December 12, 2009. Larry Gubas of Zeiss Historica is asking for your help with material for his third book on Zeiss, this time on Zeiss-Ikon cameras. Larry writes: "Is it possible to access materials relating to the earliest of the Zeiss/Ica companies. My current needs are that of the firms of Huettig, Dr. Kruegener, Wuensche, Zeiss Palmos and, of course, Zulauf of Switzerland. I would like images of cameras, ads or catalogs. I am willing to purchase but also quite happy to make use of copies or scans of catalogs." If you can help Larry (and collectors everywhere) please contact him via email at larrygubas@gmail.com.

Made about 1879, the camera is an Dr Krugener's Simplex Magazinexample of clever engineering and beautiful construction from over a century ago. The presentation by the late Bill Kantymir included the tale of how he discovered this rare beauty. Click the image to the right to visit the December Show & Tell page for more details about this and the other interesting items presented by our members.

Remember, if you are in the Toronto area, drop in and join us. We meet the third Wednesday of each month from September through June at the North York Memorial Hall.

Journal
Each issue of Photographic Canadiana brings you news and informative articles on cameras, images and photographers with an emphasis on Canadian stories. Four issues are published annually with mainly original articles and pictures. This original material is occasionally augmented by carefully selected articles first published in other journals.

PC 35-4ISSUE 35-4. The latest copy of Photographic Canadiana goes in the mail next week. The cover picture is an 1898 portrait of Mary Marble by Fritz Guerin. Inside is an article on how Guerin made his very superior portraits over a century ago. John Kantymir describes the beautiful Una Traveller camera that he came across on a recent trip overseas. Robert Gutteridge eloquently describes how he acquired a Butcher Home Kinematograph and traced its provenance. We learn more about the Gordon "business in a box" camera as another one pops up along with a Mandel.

The rest of the 20 page journal contains the various regular columns and recent news items such as "Browsing through our Exchanges", "Toronto Notes", and President Clint's message on the New Year and our plans for 2010.

If you are a member, you will have this issue shortly. Not a member? Well we have a $35 solution for that. Go to the Membership Page for more information or click here for a form.

TOKYO, JAPAN, July - August 2008. In Tokyo, Japan, there is a camera club devoted to making and using unusual cameras. Editor Bob Lansdale has been in contact with Sam Mabuchi of the Japan Hand Made Camera Club which held an exhibit this past summer of the cameras and photographs created by the JHMCC members.

After the exhibit, Mr Mabuchi compiled a digital version of the catalogue which he has graciously allowed us to display. The Coffee Mill Camera at left by Hijikta Kensuke, is shown on page 3 of the catalogue. Click on the Coffee Mill image to view the catalogue slide show.
