Postcard and Paper Shows TORONTO, Sunday, May 24, 2009. While attending the Toronto Postcard Club show last February, I spoke with Janet Dalton who hosts a series of Postcard and Paper Shows along with her father. Vendors at these shows often have images and photographic ephemera for sale along with the old photographic postcards. Click the image at left for a larger view, and mark you calendar to have a look at one of these upcoming shows. The Dalton web site, Postcard-Directory.com, has links to a great number of dealers. Have a look.
rafael goldchainTORONTO, Sunday, September 21, 2008. Rafael Goldchain, who gave an exciting talk at our January 2008 meeting, has his book launch at David Mirvish Books, 596 Markham Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M6G 2L8, from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday, September 21st. "I Am My Family" is a family album of traditional portrait photographs with an unconventional twist: the only subject is Goldchain himself. In an elaborate process involving genealogical research, the use of makeup, hair styling, costume, and props, Goldchain transforms himself into his ancestors and captures their personifications with the camera. Taking some liberties with historical accuracy, Goldchain has assembled a fascinating cast of characters: from his short-story-writing grandfather, to his great-aunts Pola and Fela, to the Gur Rabbi's nephew and his bride Rachelle, Goldchain reinvents himself over and over again. These beautifully reproduced self-portraits trace the evolution of Jewish culture from tradition to modernity and invite us to engage the history of a family decimated and scattered by the traumatic events of the 20th century. Featuring an essay by art historian and curator Martha Langford, the portraits are complemented by a selection of the archival images and selections from the artist's sketchbooks.

Afghan Woman by Lana SlezicTORONTO, Thursday, October 2, 2008. World Press Photo Foundation 08 Exhibition opens in Toronto at the Allen Lambert Galleria in Brookfield Place at the foot of Bay Street in downtown Toronto. The image at the left is a portrait of an Afghan woman in Kabul, taken by Lana Slezic of Mississauga who is currently living in Delhi, India. The exhibition runs to October 22nd. Be sure to catch it - click Lana's image at left for details.

3_d Photo Perspective BUFFALO, Thursday, September 12, 2008. 3-Dimenstional Photo Perspective: People, Places and Things opens at Elmwood Framing and Interiors, the Stuyvesant Gallery, 245 Elmwood Av, Buffalo NY. Our June Speaker, Paul Pasquarello, is showing a selection of his wide angle stereo images in the form of three foot wide anaglyph prints. The images were recorded on Fuji slide film, scanned into Photoshop, stretched to the anamorphic ratio, converted to anaglyphs and printed on an Epson 44" printer. The prints were then laminated with a matt UV laminate and mounted to 3/8" Gatorfoam and framed. Paul made about 100 Anaglyph "opera" glasses "on a (chop)stick" for viewing. The show ends October 24th. If you are in Buffalo, Paul invites you to drop by and see his striking large size stereo anaglyphs. Click the icon at left to see the advertising card for the show.

old flashBARCELONA, SPAIN, Tuesday, August 26, 2008. Pere Pons, a retired photographer emailed me for information on the Schlichter photometer that John Linsky presented in our 2004 Show and Tell. I passed Pere over to John and hopefully John can share what information he has on this odd photometer. Meantime, I looked at Pere's web site and he has done a marvellous job. Much of the site uses Flash/Shockwave to give a smooth operation. The images of items in his collection are striking works of art. Click the image at the left and have a peek at a professional photographer's collection website.

Zeiss 1909HOLLYWOOD, FLORIDA, Tuesday, August 26, 2008. While browsing Pere Pons' site, I came across a short message left by Seth Broder of Florida. His site is also of interest. Seth deals in old collectible cameras. His site has scans of many old catalogues showing most the pages, not just cover shots. Click the image at left (from a 1909 Zeiss catalogue) and take a peek at the Camera Eccentric website. Click on the "Info on Camera Equip." button on the Camera Eccentric web site to see the catalogues on the site.

girl in satin dressRussian royaltyTORONTO, Monday, July 21, 2008. Photographic Canadiana columnist George Dunbar often sends us a note about interesting sites he has come across. In mid July, I received this typically terse email message: "Have you seen the George Eastman House images on Flickr? Go to: http://flickr.com/photos/george_eastman_house. Amazing old photos, some in colour!". And George was right on. Have a look at these images GEH posted from its extensive collection of historic old photos. Well worth the visit! And for a look at the next generation of photographers, take a peek at the Sheridan College Students' web sites. We were introduced to these young photographers last January by Rafael Goldchain.

four solitudesSt GEORGE, ONTARIO, June 22nd, 2008. Serengeti Press and The Book Band announce the publication of long time PHSC member Stan White's book, Four Solitudes. It was launched at the St. George Lawn Bowling Club (Thompson and West Streets in St. George) Mr. White gave a short reading. In his new book of poetry, S.J. White focuses his photographer’s eye on the solitude that can confront everyman, and gathers it into four aspects of experience. Four Solitudes, published by Serengeti Press (www.serengetipress.ca ), reflects the brilliance of nature (“… the sky distilled / into its elemental light”), murmurs the words of trees (“I am the seed the need the forest breed”), and explores the intricacies of old age, place, time and space. In addition to his poetry and fiction writing, Stan White has an international reputation for his stereo photography.

EULOGY FOR Dr. WALTER MANDLER 1922 - 2005. Rolf Fricke, the well respected authority on the Leica camera, has Dr Walter Mandler Eulogy by Rolf Fricke
generously permitted the PHSC to reproduce his Eulogy to Dr. Walter Mandler, the famous Leitz lens designer who lived in Midland, Ontario, Canada after emigrating from post war Germany.

At Leitz Midland, Dr. Mandler designed a large number of lenses for screw-mount, M-series and R-series Leicas as well as special lenses for the US Military. If you owned a Leica camera in the past fifty years, you likely used one of Dr. Mandler's lens designs.
