HEATHER MORTON: Artist’s Porfolios - Marketing in the Digital Age

Ms Morton is a Toronto based Art Buyer. What is that, you ask? Well, this is her reply; "Art Buying refers to the act of securing still imagery for Commercial use. In a nutshell, I help advertising agencies and design firms find the right photographer or illustrator for their concept and manage the process of producing that image.

"The Art Buyer fulfills two important but different functions. On one hand, it is a creative role- collaborating with the Creative Team to source the right creative supplier takes a keen interpretive eye combined with a comprehensive knowledge of current photography and illustration trends and styles. In a completely different way, an Art Buyer is also a Project Manager."

Join us and see how this aspect of Commercial photography has changed with the evolution of digital technologies.

The public is welcome. Go to our Programs page for times and directions (at the top of the left side bar on that page).

For example, at the December 2003 Show & Tell presentation we were shown a number of unusual cameras including this rare Dr. Kruegener Simplex Magazin detective camera complete with its case. Made about 1879, the camera is an Dr Krugener's Simplex Magazinexample of clever engineering and beautiful construction from over a century ago. The presentation by the late Bill Kantymir included the tale of how he discovered this rare beauty. Click the image to the right to visit the December Show & Tell page for more details about this and the other interesting items presented by our members.

Remember, if you are in the Toronto area, drop in and join us. We meet the third Wednesday of each month from September through June at the North York Memorial Hall.

Journal
Each issue of Photographic Canadiana brings you news and informative articles on cameras, images and photographers with an emphasis on Canadian stories. Four issues are published annually with mainly original articles and pictures. This original material is occasionally augmented by carefully selected articles first published in other journals.

PC 36-1ISSUE 36-1. The latest copy of Photographic Canadiana is off to the printer. The cover picture is one of the famous Cirkut cameras so popular a century ago to record extreme panoramic landscapes and group photographs. This issue has extensive coverage of the Cirkut camera, its inventors and history including material by the late Bill McBride. Another article addresses the reason why the majority of 19th century photographers in Toronto were clustered along a few blocks of King St East. This article is followed by a discussion of the lighting used in the late 19th century studios. The rest of the 20 page journal contains the various regular columns and recent news items such as "Browsing through our Exchanges", "Toronto Notes", and President Clint's message on birthdays, auctions and fairs...

If you are a member, you will have this issue shortly. Not a member? Well we have a $35 solution for that. Go to the Membership Page for more information or click here for a form.

Newsletter

Click to view back issuesThis full colour newsletter is issued (usually) a week or two before our monthly meeting. It conveys late news including details about our next guest speaker, articles, advertisements, and other items of current interest. Back issues can be viewed here.

PHSC E-Mail 10-2ISSUE 10-2. We open this issue with details on our June speaker, Heather Morton. Doug Napier then gives us the low down on the auction he is chairing for this Sunday, June 6th. In "From the 'Net" we learn the outcome of the auction in Austria - One of the original Daguerreotype cameras went for nearly a million dollars. And there was lots to learn at our fair last month - from old novelties to rare movie projectors to optical toys like the Polyorama Panoptique "portable diorama". These are items that you usually cannot find even in a museum. In "Notes from Ev:" written by our 96 year old editor emeritus, we learn about an old lighting accessory. And we have the usual wealth of other ideas, ads, and coming events.

If you would like to receive future copies of this free newsletter as they are released, send your request to our e-mail address, info@phsc.ca.

Clock-wise from left: Remember that joke about the moving picture machine last February? Our editor found one at our last fair! M LeMai had more rare projectors at the fair. 1934 SASHALITE flash bulb. Doug Napier wants you at our Auction on June 6th. Bob Gutteridge shows Messrs Carter and White a portable diorama from 1840. And last at the lower left, this is what kind of camera you can buy for a million dollars - an original Daguerreotype camera of 1839.

TOKYO, JAPAN, July - August 2008. In Tokyo, Japan, there is a camera club devoted to making and using unusual cameras. Editor Bob Lansdale has been in contact with Sam Mabuchi of the Japan Hand Made Camera Club which held an exhibit this past summer of the cameras and photographs created by the JHMCC members.

After the exhibit, Mr Mabuchi compiled a digital version of the catalogue which he has graciously allowed us to display.
